Walls and pillars are coming down during the construction works of a new home in Barcelona: Red Staircase House. The house proposes an atemporal, fresh and peaceful atmosphere, but including a playful twist in the form of a red, statement staircase, which becomes the home’s centrepiece leading up to a monochrome wooden first floor.

By removing superfluous elements, but keeping the essential, the ground floor of the Red staircase home becomes an open living space, connected to the garden. Bringing in a signature, red staircase to the middle of the programme, we connect the ground floor to the first floor, creating a double height, which makes the home susceptible to future change and users. If need be, the Red staircase home can be transformed into apartments, without having to change the initial concept of the design.
While the first floor comes entirely in wood, part of its facade is opened up with an additional window, enabling streams of light to move from one side to the other. Additionally, this centre space also acts as a buffer area between the master bedroom and those of the family’s children.
